On July 6, 2026, our office filed a class action lawsuit against the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board. This request seeks compensatory and punitive damages for the individuals whose personal information was disclosed by École secondaire Rosemère in an email dated July 2, 2026.
Our client’s story
On July 2, 2026, our client, as well as all caregivers enrolled for the 2026-2027 school year at École secondaire Rosemère (or Rosemere High School), received an email entitled “ROSEMERE HIGH SCHOOL – Back to School 2026-27”.
After reading it, our client noticed that an attachment named “letter.xls” accompanied the message. So he took care to consult her. It was at this point that he discovered that the Excel file contained confidential information from more than 2,000 parents whose children attend high school.
This information includes first and last names, telephone numbers, dates of birth, residential addresses, email addresses and social insurance numbers.
The proposed class action
In accordance with the Act respecting Access to documents held by public bodies and the Protection of personal information (hereinafter the “Access Act”), our client had the right to expect that his personal information would be protected by the school and the School Board.
By keeping all the personal information of persons with a dependent child enrolled in the school in a single document and by sharing it, the School Board has seriously neglected the protection of the personal information of these persons.
The proposed class
All individuals whose personal information was compromised in connection with the July 2, 2026 email from École secondaire Rosemère.
Applications lodged with the Court
Application for authorization to institute a class action.
Current status of the file
Awaiting authorization by a judge of the Superior Court.
